Replacement markets The movement and number of transactions buying and selling replacement cattle willl slow between now and year end.

Wheat fields are now receiving cattle and some cattle aready placed on wheat are challenged with winter weather. The good grazing opportunities may slow the movement of light cattle into the feedyards. Early grazing problems of storms and bad health are always on the forefront at this time of year.

Prices rebounded at auction this week.

Feeder Cattle Cash Index. The index will now track the January contract to expiration. National Weekly Feeder Summary released on Friday of each week tracks the national prices by region for last week. Corn prices softened at mid week. Harvest is mostly complete. The basis is currently at 50 over the December board in Guymon, Oklahoma.

It is not unusual for agricultural reports to send misinformation into the market instead of accurate information. The news of a bumper corn crop might translate into the reality of a dismal crop with the hope that news of a good crop will drive down corn prices in order for China to jump into the market as a buyer.

Against this backdrop, commodity traders carefully weighed this past week's announcement from the Minister of Agriculture voicing alarm at the advance into new provinces of the virulent African Swine Fever. Already hundreds of thousands of pigs have been affected and numerous regions quarantined.

This new warning to the public will scare consumers and impact pork consumption. The announcement also will put pork producers, who have been transporting pigs illegally from quarantined areas, on alert to new government monitoring of transport traffic that is endangering the entire pig population.

The increased scrutiny of transport will hopefully limit the spread of the disease from pork production facilities. Another source of the spread of the disease are wild hogs that roam the countryside and can carry the disease.

Already there are reports of spreading to the EU. This latest announcement in China has the potential for threatening the entire Chinese population of half a billion pigs -- almost half the world's supply.

The implications are immense for world meat supplies. Something potentially this large could also spill over into improved beef demand.
